OVERVIEW:
Introductory but challenging course providing a comprehensive overview of the bond lending and financing markets, with focus on the repo trader's perspective. Uses Bloomberg on-line.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
This introductory/intermediate-level course provides a comprehensive overview of the fixed income repo product. You will learn the economic motivations of the market players and come to grips with the main trading structures, delivery methods, risk elements and documentation.
As part of a small group, you will put your learning to the test by employing alternative trading structures in an extensive case study using Bloomberg analytics.
You will gain an understanding of the role of the repo desk as the hub of the fixed income trading floor including the use of repo in the derivatives market. You will benefit from an in-depth analysis of the gilt repo market as well as learn the distinguishing characteristics of the other major domestic markets.
You will learn what factors drive demand to borrow specific securities and create specials in the market through a review of the main bond trading strategies used by proprietary dealers and hedge funds. How repo activity affects value along the yield curve will be explained together with forward pricing and the use of sophisticated repo structures.
You will assume the role of a repo trader and manage your positions as part of an exercise in running a repo book.
