Non-bank lending more than doubles from 2010-2018: BIS
March 3, 2020

The non-bank lending business is growing. The market for so-called private loans by institutions that are not traditional banks, but rather private equity firms and asset managers, has grown significantly in recent years.

The latest quarterly report by the Bank for International Settlements shows that private loans have grown, from US$300 billion in 2010 to $800 billionn in 2018. Economists at the BIS refer to studies showing that one in two of these loans is made in the US, a quarter are in the UK and the rest are spread around the world.

While the growth in private credit is a decades-long trend, it accelerated after the great financial crisis of 2007-09, notes the BIS.
