| Which organisation acts as central securities depository? | The legal framework of the country provides for multiple depositories such that all depositories are linked to each another. |
| Registration and registrars | All securities which are dematerialised are registered in the name of the depository. For such securities, the depository's record of ownership has the same status as the register of members maintained by or on behalf of the issuer. In view of this, securities transferred from one account to another within a depository do not require any registration. For other transfers, registration is performed by Registrar and Transfer Agents (registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India). |
| Who provides a central securities settlement system? | For dematerialised instruments held in a depository, the depository carries out this function. In other cases, this function is performed by the clearing corporations/ clearing houses attached to the stock exchanges. |
